Area activation: a computational model of saccadic selectivity in visual search

چکیده
The Area Activation Model (Pomplun, Reingold, Shen, & Williams, 2000) is a computational model predicting the statistical distribution of saccadic endpoints in visual search tasks. Its basic assumption is that saccades in visual search tend to foveate display areas that provide a maximum amount of taskrelevant information for processing during the subsequent fixation. In the present study, a counterintuitive prediction by the model is empirically tested, namely that saccadic selectivity towards stimulus features depends on the spatial arrangement of search items. We find good correspondence between simulated and empirically observed selectivity patterns, providing strong support for the Area Activation Model. © 2003 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Area Activation 1 Running Head: AREA ACTIVATION Advancing Area Activation towards a General Model of Eye Movements in Visual Search
Many of our everyday tasks require us to perform visual search. Therefore, an adequate model of visual search is an indispensable part of any plausible approach to modeling integrated cognitive systems that process visual input. Due to its quantitative nature, absence of freely adjustable parameters, and support from empirical research results, the Area Activation Model is presented as a promis...
متن کاملThe Area Activation Model of Saccadic Selectivity in Visual Search
We present an approach towards a simple, explicit model of saccadic selectivity in visual search tasks. The model in its present state includes weights for target-distractor similarities and fixation field size as its only adjustable parameters. Based on these, the model predicts the statistical distribution of saccadic endpoints for any given visual search display. Besides providing an explici...
متن کاملMapping the Color Space of Saccadic Selectivity in Visual Search
Color coding is used to guide attention in computer displays for such critical tasks as baggage screening or air traffic control. It has been shown that a display object attracts more attention if its color is more similar to the color for which one is searching. However, what does similar precisely mean? Can we predict the amount of attention that a display color will receive during a search f...
متن کاملDistractor ratio influences patterns of eye movements during visual search.
We examined the flexibility of guidance in a conjunctive search task by manipulating the ratios between different types of distractors. Participants were asked to decide whether a target was present or absent among distractors sharing either colour or shape. Results indicated a strong effect of distractor ratio on search performance. Shorter latency to move, faster manual response, and fewer fi...
متن کاملRunning head: SACCADIC SELECTIVITY DURING VISUAL SEARCH
The current study examined the relation between the difficulty of central discrimination and the efficiency of peripheral selection in visual search tasks. Participants were asked to search for a target among high-, medium-, and low-similarity distractors. In Experiment 1, while the duration of current fixations increased with increasing target-distractor similarity, there was no evidence that ...
